Senior Living during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Since the World Health Organization declared it a worldwide pandemic on March 11th, 2020, COVID-19 has affected the lives of everyone around the world. Seniors are particularly vulnerable to the virus, which is why local and state mandates have advised them to stay home and self-isolate. Here in California, nearly 1.3 million seniors already live alone (Public Policy Institute of California) but that doesn’t mean the adjustment has been easy for them. Right now, the PPIC estimates a staggering 400,000 seniors are socially isolating at home with no internet access, and while California ranks the 5th best state in the nation for seniors, loneliness and social isolation have been difficult to contend with over the course of the past four months. Like most senior living communities in Sacramento and surrounding areas, Summerset Senior Living is all too aware of the challenges presented to seniors by COVID-19, and we’re working hard to help them overcome those challenges.
Observational and correlational studies have linked continuous feelings of social isolation and loneliness with higher risk of developing certain mental and physical health conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and even premature death (Unspoken-COVID). With no clear end in sight for the pandemic, seniors may want to consider living options that may be more conducive to meeting their needs while they shelter in place. Independent or assisted senior living communities can allow seniors to maintain their independence while still having easy access to the amenities, social interaction, and medical care they need.
Senior living communities, whether independent or assisted, offer an excellent alternative to living alone during the pandemic for seniors of all ages. The best part is that it doesn’t have to be permanent – if you want to shelter at a senior living community while the pandemic is going on, you can choose to look at other options when it’s over. Of course, with amenities like round the clock staff, three home cooked meals per day, internet access, socially distant activities, care coordination, and a hefty amount of attention and love, we feel that many will prefer to stay!
