It’s Never Too Late to Learn Something New!
At Summerset Senior Living, we know that just because you’re over 50, it’s not too late for you to start a new hobby, take some classes, or learn a new skill. Every day, we help our residents stay mentally and physically active with a range of stimulating activities and planned social outings. We have seen people of all ages grow by trying new things. That’s why today, we want to encourage you to try something new, no matter what stage of life you are in. Here are some of our ideas for learning experiences that can benefit seniors in a multitude of ways:
Learning a New Language
When you learn a new language, it opens you up to a whole new world of experiences and friendships. While it is easier for children to learn a second language, seniors can also benefit tremendously from studying other cultures. When you learn a new language, it helps your brain rewire your neural pathways and may even stimulate the production of new brain cells through a process known as neurogenesis. A 2020 study conducted by researchers at Iowa State University showed that learning another language can potentially delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia symptoms by up to five years! A great reason to explore language learning.
Picking Up a New Hobby
Learning another language is certainly beneficial, but it’s not for everyone. If you just want something fun to keep you engaged, finding a new hobby could be just what you need. Trying a physical hobby, like walking, hiking, or engaging in a low-impact sport can help you stay in shape and reduce your chances of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and more.
Mentally stimulating hobbies are also a great idea for seniors. Learning to play an instrument, writing a blog or journal, and painting are all good options. You can even combine hobbies; for instance, you could take a walk outdoors and learn to identify some of your local species of birds and plants.
No matter what hobby you choose, it’s bound to be both fun and intellectually stimulating, so be creative and find something that appeals to you!
Taking Online Classes
It may have been a while since you last spent time in a classroom, but that doesn’t mean your educational journey has to be over. Online classes make it easy for anyone to learn new skills and create opportunities for growth.
Whether you want to learn more about technology, study up on a favorite academic topic, or learn skills that will improve your quality of life, the internet is full of resources to help you. Many universities (including Harvard) even offer free online courses on topics ranging from game development to accounting and everything in between. No matter your age, taking an online class could lead to a stimulating second act.
