Celebrate our Senior Independence this 4th of July!
As we age, we realize that the word “Independence” can sometimes be a little more challenging when it comes to enjoying 4th of July festivities and BBQ’s without assistance. But there is no need to limit your enjoyment when you have family, friends and/or a fabulous place like Summerset to call home.
Enjoying time with loved ones or neighbors this 4th of July can be fun and engaging. Sharing recipes for your favorite 4th of July Dessert and hosting a progressive bbq event is always fun.
Everyone enjoys feeling needed and/or involved. 4th of July provides the perfect opportunity for seniors to take part in the preparations for the holiday.
Creating photo albums or collages of photos from 4th of July celebrations over the years can be a fun time to reminisce.
Trivia games can also be enjoyable in mixed groups of all ages. Think of questions with American themes like geography, the presidents, or historical events. This puts everyone’s memory to the test in a fun way, and it provides education to the younger crowd with their stories and memories of these places and events.
Watching parades on TV can be enjoyable as well with a little pre-planning when a seniors are included.
It’s important also to limit the amount of direct sunlight seniors will be exposed to in case you do enjoy festivities outdoors. Hot 4th of July sun can wear anyone out as well as run the risk of burns, especially with Seniors. Another option before watching fireworks in the evening is to watch a classic movie with a Patriotic theme.
In the evening you can all watch the fireworks shows together if you are not able to in person. If you do however choose to watch fireworks in person at a local park or nearby field, make sure to bring jackets and/or blankets to ensure everyone is able to stay warm should it cool off at night.
However you choose to celebrate, make the most of it and remember to celebrate our Nation and all that we stand for.
Happy 4th of July!
