Crop tops, Crocs & chaos – fashion, according to Summerset Seniors in Lincoln

Every month at Summerset Senior Living in Lincoln, we stroll through our cozy lounges, sunny patios and buzzing game rooms to catch up with the true experts of life – our residents. With decades of lived experience, they’ve seen hemlines rise and fall, shoulder pads come and go, and now … the return of 1990s fashion?
From humorous critiques to nostalgic reflections, their takes were bold and brilliant. Because, let’s face it – no one serves side-eye like a senior who’s lived through four fashion cycles and still dresses for dinner.
This month’s Hot Take question: What do you think about today’s fashion trends – crop tops, oversized everything, bold colors and the return of ’90s style?
Laney, 101: “I saw a girl on TV wearing a shirt so short I thought it was a bra. If I wore that in the ’50s, my mother would’ve locked me in my room until Easter.”
Stock, 102: “Pajamas to an interview? The style is laissez-faire. That would have never, ever happened back then.”
Jenny, ageless: “I don’t understand Crocs. Are they shoes? Are they gardening tools? Either way, no thank you.”
Marlene, 85: “Oh, no. I don’t like it at all. That’s all I’m going to say about that.”
Whether they’re shaking their heads or sharing a good laugh, the residents at Summerset remind us that while fashion may be fleeting, personality is timeless. Their candid takes keep us grounded, entertained and connected to a generation that’s not only seen it all – but likely wore it better.
We’ll return next month with more unfiltered wisdom, humor and perspective straight from our Summerset community. Know a resident we should feature, or have a question you’d love to hear them weigh in on? Send it our way and help us continue spotlighting the voices, stories and spirit of our incredible elders.
